Do you dream of a job promotion, yet somehow it never comes? Perhaps it's because you're dreaming too much and not taking initiative. If you want to get promoted, you've got to take action. Here are 7 action steps to help turn your dream promotion into a reality.

1. Be on time all the time

It may seem like a no-brainer, but how can you expect a promotion at work if you're consistently late? Employees who squeak in even a couple minutes late are sending signals to the boss that work is where they'd rather not be. Show your boss you're eager to begin your day by showing up at least 10 to 15 minutes early, with time to spare to make your coffee and get settled before working.

2. Work extra hours

This, of course, is a tricky one. While you don't want your job to dominate your life, you do want your boss to see you as someone who will give a little extra to the organization, and that includes offering to stay late if needed.

3. Dress for success

Image is everything. If you want to be seen as a professional, then you have to start dressing like one. While this may seem shallow, your appearance is a visual cue to the boss of what type of employee you are. Will you be one who slaps something on in the morning for your dead-end position, or are you one who dresses like you already are a professional?

Although money shouldn't be the most important factor in career decisions, it has a big impact on our lives. How much money we earn will dictate where we live, where we vacation, the lifestyle we enjoy, and how and when we will retire.

When you work for someone else, you have a limited amount of control over your salary. You negotiate your starting salary and then you are given increases at management's discretion for annual reviews and promotions. Do you want more control over your salary? By understanding and increasing the value you provide to your organization, you have the ability to increase the amount of money you can earn.

Here are five ways to start increasing the value you provide to the organization and ultimately, the salary that you earn.

1. Specialize in a new area. Research upcoming trends in your industry or find an area of weakness in your organization and establish yourself as the expert. It may require additional education, training or certifications, but if you are the go-to person for all related matters, you become an indispensable asset.

2. Make a direct impact on the bottom line. The sole purpose of every company is to generate a profit. Suggest a new way to service your existing customer base to create a new income stream. If you do not work directly in a revenue producing area of business, implement new practices that will save the company money. Calculate the impact you have on the bottom line and your value will be evident.

3. Be professional at all times. Although it sounds like a no-brainer, it can be easy to get caught up in office politics. Rise above the pettiness that can occur when a group of coworkers spend more time with each other than they do with their own families. Negative attitudes can significantly lower the production of a group. Participating in trivial activities can impact your annual raises and limits your opportunities for advancement.

4. Do something different. The danger of having a routine is that you rarely leave your comfort zone. Playing it safe doesn't produce the "WOW" effect. Expand your focus and start taking calculated risks to drastically increase your results. Don't be afraid to speak up in meetings with new and different ideas that will bring a fresh approach to achieving organizational goals.

5. Know your market value. It's important to keep abreast of changes in the market. Become familiar with tools and websites that provide updated salary data, know what the competition is paying, and understand your company's compensation policies. Armed with this information, you will be better equipped to negotiate annual and promotional salary adjustments.

Salary is a complicated subject. Getting paid more money isn't something that can be accomplished overnight. Most organizations have a budget for salary increases that is divided among eligible employees. Put yourself in management's shoes for a minute. Is the value you provide to the company worth more or less than your colleagues? Once you take the emotional piece out of the salary equation, you can objectively create a plan to start getting paid what you are truly worth.

How to Deal With a Bully at Work

Evaluate the situation. Try to find out how much stress the bully has caused you.
Note down each incident. Use a note pad or word processor to outline the date, time and nature of each infraction.

Talk with the bully. Approach the individual and request a private meeting.

Make a stand. Calmly and professionally explain every incident. Tell him/her that his/her behavior affects you and ask him/her to stop.

Inform your supervisor. Schedule a one-on-one discussion with your boss. Refer to your notes and outline the bully's behavior. Workplaces do not tolerate bullying. Thus, supervisors are obliged by company policy to address these issues and stop them.

I very well agree with George Voinovich when he said "I do not want our children and grandchildren to live in a world where everyday they fear some regional strongman with weapons of mass destruction. We need to send a message to these future would-be bullies: you will not be allowed to threaten the world".

Do you remember when bullying at school was a common concern and that most of us suffered from mental anguish because of it? Take the case of Winona Ryder when she once said: "Remember, I'm the kind of kid who used to get stuffed into a locker by school bullies. I've never felt like I'm a big star at any level of my life."

Unfortunately, some bullies have carried this mentality into the professional world. The effects and consequences of such behavior are devastating. Victims of bullying continue to suffer emotionally, socially, and at worst, financially. Anna Julia Cooper said that: "Bullies are always cowards at heart and may be credited with a pretty safe instinct in scenting their prey."

Some employees may feel so trapped that they may go as far as quitting their job to escape this toxic environment. The perpetrator, otherwise called the bully, on the other hand, can face legal penalties, lawsuits, and termination. Sad to note however that 80 percent of workplace bullying comes from supervisors, but your co-workers can be just as detrimental.

If you are being bullied at work, do not be afraid! This treatment can never be justified nor excused. And there are ways to knock down these workplace bullies through communication!

How do I handle burnout?

You have probably watched (or at least heard of) the Julia Roberts’ movie Eat, Pray & Love. Burnout happens when we frequently feel exhausted, drained and weary. It’s a common phenomenon affecting both men and women regardless of age and background. We can experience burnout from work, family life and relationships.

It’s a red flag. Brushing it off won’t make it go away. Not many of us have the luxurious opportunity to ‘take-off’ for a prolonged period of time, hence, it’s wise to learn how to cope…better yet, learn ways on how to prevent it.

Let’s start with self-reflection:
1. Do I lack balance in life?
2. Am I achieving my life purpose?
3. Do I need to alter my outlook or attitude?

If we answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, then let’s further ask ourselves:

How willing am I to make changes to improve quality of life?

As a Professional Life Coach, I’ve worked with several individuals who have reached their goals, i.e. fulfill a life purpose or dream, live a balanced life, develop positive attitudes. But the desire to change comes from within. I am a mere instrument of change.

What can we realistically do?

To breathe back energy, freshness, and spirit, we need to seriously look at how we manage our life.

DESIRED OUTCOME: balance, success and fulfillment.
FACT: no shortcuts.
SOLUTION: Carefully map out where time and attention go. Be responsible for consistent self-improvement.

1. Aim to have your own BALANCE while weaving the fabric of human life:

Spiritual well-being – A strong spiritual life anchors us to a supreme being; hence, we face challenges with more ease.
Relationships – We are social beings. Nurture support systems: family, peers and other people we regularly interact with.
Career – this includes volunteer/charity work and professional studies
Finances
Personal development – talents and potentials that contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations
Fitness and health – physical and emotional wellness
Fun and recreation – time for play, relaxation, hobbies
Leading a balanced life is about finding time for various needs. Define what a balanced life looks like. It’s unique and personal. Stay open and adaptable to shifting needs.

2. Become a better version of ourselves, i. e. a well-rounded person playing many roles: spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend, and worker. Develop a winning attitude, i.e. resilience, optimism, self-discipline. EMBRACE CHANGE.

3. Have clear priorities and learn to pleasantly say ‘no’. These two are intertwined. Boundaries tell us when and where to draw the line. Be flexible for unexpected events.

Life has ups and downs. A life purpose and mission add meaning to our daily struggles. Set small achievable goals. Celebrate milestones. When you encounter a setback or experience burnout, learn from it.

Move forward with a strong determination to DO better and BE better.

Let’s end this quote from Wesley Woo: "To succeed, you must first improve. To improve, you must first practice. To practice, you must first learn. To learn, you must first fail."

Reminders for the stormy days

JOBSEEKER REMINDERS FOR THE STORMY DAYS.

Now that Pedring has passed, leaving floods and fallen billboards in its wake, here's a short advisory for employees the next time they think they'll be stranded in the office or on the streets by another storm. And the latest news has it that two more are probably on their way.

1. ALWAYS CHECK ON THE NEWS. Tune in to the TV morning news show before you leave for work. Listen to the radio while you're in transit. If office policies allow, click on news websites and even on social networking sites. The minute the hard rains break, they'll be followed by dozens of your friends' posts that the downpour has begun in their area. That information is valuable. A couple of days ago, when Pedring wasn't even a breeze (at least in the central business district), a friend of mine posted on his Facebook that the rains made it almost impossible for him to drive - and he was coming back to Manila from out-of-town through the NLEX.

2. BE PREPARED. I always bring an umbrella. Some of my colleagues tuck rubber slippers or walking shoes in their gym bag. Make sure your cellphones are charged and loaded. Being stranded on the streets without a single load to call a friend may deprive you of your only chance of going home, and worry your family back home needlessly.

3. HAVE AN EAR FOR WHAT HR IS DOING. Some HR managers and department heads wait for the last minute before calling off work; by then it would be late afternoon and you'd be better off waiting the traffic gridlock in your workplace than commuting back home. Other bosses and HR personnel actually welcome advisories from employees. If you think the situation is getting worse (and they're too busy to notice), show them the latest CNN bulletin.

4. BE IN TOUCH WITH YOUR NETWORK. Don't go home alone. There is strength in numbers, especially when the winds and rains get stronger. You may need to bunk in with a friend, or welcome one into the warmth of your home. Or another friend might be able to take you home if he has a car, and you don't.

5. HAVE ALTERNATE STOPS IN MIND. In case you can't get through the floods and there's no friend in sight, have an alternative stop or two where you can safely weather the storm. It may be the nearest - and largest - burger franchise where you can hang out for hours while enjoying a hot meal. Hopefully, it's closer to the terminal of your ATM card in case you'd need extra cash. Better yet, it would be helpful if you know the person in your department who keeps the office key. Spending the night in the workplace is far from a picnic, but it's a lot better than standing on the streets waiting for a ride.

6. GETTING HOME IS JUST PART OF THE BATTLE. IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO STAY WELL SO YOU DON'T END UP BEING ABSENT FOR DAYS. Read our article on this topic here:

Are you a Juan Tamad jobseeker?

The tell-tale signs of a Juan Tamad jobseeker:

• He expects the job to “come to him” instead of looking for it.

• He doesn’t think of tomorrow, believing at the back of his mind that his parents – or whoever it is that’s supporting him (e.g. his wife) – will always be there to put food on the table and pay for the rent.

• He doesn’t come prepared for the interview. Worse, he may not even show up for the interview.

• He may also come in late, and doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with his tardiness.

• He doesn’t care whether he gets the job or not, and shows lack of enthusiasm during the interview. To the recruiter, he looks bored, non-committal, non-communicative, and plain lazy.

Why the Juan Tamad jobseeker acts this way:

• He thinks he’s safe, that the good times will last forever, that his parents or provider will always be around to support him. If the economy does go south and his caretakers suddenly leave him (in one form or another), he wouldn’t know what to do. It’s as if the world had ended.

• He’s used to being taken care of. This has nothing to do with social class. There are some rich parents who make their kids work for their keep – and some poor parents who can’t get by but still, in their own small way, spoil their kids.

• He was not taught responsibility (or if his parents tried, he stubbornly refused to learn).

• He has a sense of entitlement – he believes the world owes him a lot of favors, even though he has not exerted any effort to earn them.

• He has no goal or dream in life – that’s why he does not have the motivation to improve himself, learn, and achieve a better kind of life.

The Juan Tamad Kind of Jobseeker

The ‘Juan Tamad’ Job-hunters

My title does sound like a contradiction, but it’s true: there are what I’d call ‘Juan Tamad job-hunters.’ Like our well-known folk character, these jobseekers (again a contradiction) just wait for the apple to fall from the trees – or the job to land on their laps.

Some of them just stay at home, and wait for their parents, cousins, friends, classmates, old teachers, and assorted relatives to send their CV to employers and arrange for their interviews. Others may search the job sites and look for work in the classified ads, but they’re lethargic in their quest. They say yes to recruiters who ask them to come for interviews, but come in late or don’t show up at all. Or they show up disinterested and bored, not caring whether they got hired or not.

The hiring manager can spot this kind of a lazy, indifferent jobseeker and will end the interview after a few minutes. Why? Because the Juan Tamad jobseeker is a risk to the company – if he shows laziness during his interview, then chances are he will exhibit a poor work ethic and an unprofessional attitude as an employee.

In my next blog, we’ll take a look why the Juan Tamad jobseeker acts this way. But right now, I’d just like to emphasize: Don’t follow his lead. Recruiters want jobseekers who are proactive, motivated, and show willingness and enthusiasm to work. After all, that’s why they are called ‘jobseekers’ – because they are seeking for work. And remember what the Bible says, only those who seek do find.

And in this kind of work environment, you really have to make the effort to look for work if you want to find a job. Our unemployment rate is still a high 7%. And every year, about 500,000 more graduating students are added to the workforce. If you’re a new graduate with no skills or experience that you can use as leverage, that means you got 500,000 new competition every single year that you don’t work. If you graduated in 2010 and you still don’t have a job this year, that means that you’ve been competing against 1 million of your batchmates in 2011 – and you’ll be stacking yourself against 1.5 million of them by March of 2012.

That’s why the Juan Tamad attitude doesn’t work and will harm you in the long run. Don’t lounge around; time is important. Don’t even be picky when it comes to job positions if you haven’t proven yourself yet. Be hungry. Look for an opportunity to shine.

A few years ago, a journalism senior applied for an entry-level position in my department as early as the November of the previous year before his graduation. (He was graduating March 2006; he sent his CV November 2005). I’ll say it again: he applied *months* before his graduation because he wanted to secure a spot for himself. He came to the interview on time, well-groomed, and for his age, projected professionalism, integrity, and competence.

I hired him on the spot – and told him I’d wait until he graduated. We don’t work in the same company anymore and I’m no longer his boss – but he is shining in his current work of employment, reporting directly to the head of the company.

Part III - The Interview day

Leave your house early. Anticipate traffic. Leave earlier than usual so that when you arrive, you’re relaxed. You’re not perspiring. Your clothes are not rumpled.

Be courteous and friendly. When you’re called, greet the person. Shake hands firmly. Wait for the other person to start.

Be brief and honest. You may be asked sensitive questions like: why did you resign? why have you not stayed longer than a year in these jobs? why were you without a job for a long time? why did you not get a job right after graduation?

You should have thought about the answers to this already. In general, you might say that you felt you were not growing in your previous job and that you wanted to develop more skills. Everyone has heard this line, of course, so you must be ready to answer the follow- up question: what skills do you feel you need to develop? how do you see those skills being developed in this company? how do you see your current skills being applied?

If you have not stayed long in many jobs, you have to ask yourself that question first: why haven’t I, indeed? Only you will know why there was a poor fit between the company and you. Be ready to answer these, though: how do we know you’re going to stay long in our company? what makes you think our company has what you are looking for? what are you looking for in a company, in the first place?

Relax and focus. Sit up and lean towards the speaker, but not too much. Focus on the interviewer and try not to let your eyes wander around the room. You can fold your hands in front of you, if you feel that they’re shaky. Keep your feet on the floor. The point is to maintain your poise.

Share solutions. Be ready to answer questions on how you might help improve your unit’s performance. What exactly could you do that others have not done yet? This is where your research, your creativity, and your experience come in.

Wait for the offer. Until they offer you a job, avoid bringing up the question of salary. They will get to it eventually, if they are interested in you.

Ask questions. Show that you are serious about the position by asking questions about it: how does the job fit in the rest of the organization? what is this position responsible for? what is it supposed to deliver? what would a typical day in this position be like?

Say thank you. Shake hands and say thank you when you leave.

Follow up but not too soon. In general, wait a week to call. Ask tactfully: "May I know the status of my application?" If they say they’ll call you, ask: "Just in case, when may be a good time to call again?" If they say they’ll call you -- again -- you’ll really just have to wait. You don’t want to turn them off by "stalking" them.

Send a thank you note. It is not common practice here, but you may send a thank you e-mail to the interviewer for the time spent during the interview.

WHAT TO DO THE NIGHT BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:

The night before the interview

Visualize. Successful athletes and businessmen do this. Imagine yourself going to the interview, shaking hands with the recruiter, answering the questions confidently.

Sleep. Get a good night’s sleep so you will be clearheaded and in an upbeat mood when you go to the interview.

Prepare your clothes and put your resume in a handy place. The night before a race, good runners lay out their clothes, their shoes, their race number. You should do the same. You are in a race for a job you desire. Put everything you need in a place where you could readily see it and pick it up. You don’t want to hurry home the next day because you forgot your resume.

This is a small detail but interviewers do take note of grooming. Make sure your clothes are dressed and neatly pressed. Clean your shoes. Comb your hair. Clean your fingernails. Do everything your mom used to nag you about when you were in fifth grade.

And yes, wear office clothes. You could dress down later when you are hired, if the company has a “dress down” culture. So leave the Chucks and t-shirts with skull-and crossbones at home.

PART 1 - PREPARING FOR THE JOB INTERVIEW

A: Einstein was supposed to have said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So perhaps, you need to start there. Take a look at all your past interviews. What did they have in common in terms of (a) preparation for the interview; (b) what you wore to the interview; (c) the questions the interviewees asked; (d) the answers you gave to those questions; (e) the questions you asked; and (f) how you ended the interview and followed up.

Days before the interview

Research. What do you know about the employer? Some interviewees know absolutely nothing about the company they are applying with, let alone the job they are applying for. To an interviewer this may signal a lack of initiative, curiosity or creativity. In the Internet age, there is no reason you cannot find out about a company. Research on the industry rate for the position.

You could also call the company and try to talk to the recruitment officer. Say something like you saw the ad but would like to know a bit more about the company (what is the nature of the business? where is it located?) or the job (what is the job about?). This, however, is not the time to ask about how much they are going to pay. Save this for later.

Many employers publish the job description and the qualifications. Find out if you have any experience or skills that could prove you have those qualifications and how you might highlight these during the interview.

Review. Go over the past interviews you’ve had. What were the usual questions? Write down these questions and your answers to them.

Revise. Take a look at your resume. How does it show that you fit the job? Tailor-fit your resume to the job you are applying for. Highlight those items that are relevant to the job.

Rehearse. Practice answering them in English and in Filipino. There are many internet resources on typical questions asked during interviews. Be ready to explain every part of your resume.

Safe and well during the storms

There was a time when weather was predictable. We would know which months of the year would by wet and when it would be dry. Things have changed the past few years.

As part of the work force, it would definitely benefit us to stay strong during this time. Here are a few snippets of information that will help you do so:

Ever wondered why you feel sluggish and sleepy when there's constant rain? It's because our serotonin and melatonin levels (hormones responsible for mood and sleep cycle, respectively) are directly affected by our exposure to the sun. This also explains why people tend to eat more when it rains.

Having this knowledge, it will therefore be easier for us to take charge of our appetites and energy levels.

Any form of exercise ( jogging, stretching, running on a treadmill, you can be creative with this) will definitely help uplift your mood and also, help normalize your sleep pattern. For the food cravings, it's ok to indulge, in fact, small frequent meals are best, as long as you choose your meals. An ideal meal should have some good source of protein, fiber in the form of fresh greens and or fruit, and a bit of complex carbohydrates, like whole grain bread or brown rice.

Extreme temperature and humidity, as well as our tendency to occupy crowded areas, make us more susceptible to airborne viruses. It's best to keep warm, take necessary supplements like vitamin C and zinc (to boost your immune system), and have enough restful, quality sleep.

Waterborne diseases are also common nowadays so make sure you take clean drinking water and eat at restaurants that are known to comply with sanitation standards.

A note on travelling safe: lightning strikes places like trees, iron waiting sheds and swimming pools so avoid these areas during thunderstorms.

Remember, it takes just a little effort in keeping oneself strong healthy and warm in this season. Listen to your body. It tells you everything you need to stay well.

Take the first offer or wait for my dream job?

This is a question that many new grads really spend a lot of time thinking about. They leave the university full of dreams and aspirations, with a firm idea on what they’d like to do in the real world. The problem is – sometimes, the job that they’d really like, their dream job, is not yet available or accessible to them.

It’s a situation all of us can relate to. Some of us dream of writing the great Filipino novel only to find out that hiring companies are looking for writers who can turn in good copy for their products. Or we dream of making a difference in government, but are informed by HR that the available post is based in a location that will take six hours of commute time everyday. Or we keep applying to the big multi-national corporations, only to be told that the last job vacancy has just been filled.

In the meantime, we spend weeks, maybe even months, of just hanging around at home or with our barkada who is also job-hunting. There may be parental pressure to help contribute to the family upkeep. Most painful of all, some of our friends do end up getting hired in the job that they want – and it does hurt, badly.

But it’s not all bad news. We do get a call from recruiters, sometimes even a job offer….as researcher, administrative assistant, call center agent, marketing assistant, department secretary…These are not the jobs we are hoping for, and if it were not for the rising bills and our boredom, we’d be tempted to turn them down.

Our parents’ question is the one thing that stops us: “But how many jobs will you turn down before you find your dream job?”

Finding a dream job is a journey – and it takes a lot of small steps to finally reach our destination. A dream job just doesn’t drop on your lap – you have to search for it, see if you have the skills for it, acquire those skills, and plan a strategy that will get the right bosses to notice you.

And that won’t happen if you do not get any job at all.

Here are a few things to think about before you say no:

Are you being practical? Can you afford to not have a job in the next few months?
2. Think of the opportunities that can be offered by this job offer. What skills will you learn? What industry will you become familiar with? Who are the professionals who you can acquaint yourself with and probably help you in your career development?
Give yourself a time table (e.g. one to two years) to learn what you can from this first job before telling yourself you need to move on. This is not a fixed plan, but something that you can use to encourage yourself if you do find out eventually that you are not fit for this job.

4. Make every second of experience in that not-so-thrilling job count. Study how you can use the skills and network that you’ve accumulated to bring you closer to your dream job or preferred industry.

The question we have always been asked by new graduates - "How do I get my first job if I don't have any work experience yet?"

Other than these basic guidelines and tips, here are a few things you might want to consider:

Be the candidate they are looking for. Many new graduates complain that it is hard to find a job. Yes, that is true, but do you also know, that it is hard to find the fittest candidate for that job? Many candidates want salaries and a car plan befitting someone with five times their experience and skill. Many lack passion and initiative. Not many want to stay in a company for more than three years, and not many want to do it the hard way or start from the bottom. Unfortunately, it’s only on reality TV where you get to sing for one season and end up a superstar with an album and multimedia exposure. In real life, every successful person has had to start at the bottom, learn lessons along the way, learn to spot opportunities and take them.

The job you prepared for in college may no longer exist when you graduate. The workplace is changing so fast, you have to keep pace with the way industry is changing. There may come a time -- and it is happening in a few industries already -- when you no longer really have to work in the office full time and while that might mean a salary cut and none of the usual social security benefits, it also means you have more time to take on other jobs and not have to dress up for it. It could mean more opportunities for growth outside the workplace. Best of all, it means you could carve out your own path, without someone telling you whether you are fit to join an employee development program or whether you are one of the stars or high potential employees and thus get promoted to a higher salary bandwidth. And you would not need a boss to tell you how good you are because your clients would by coming back for more.

Find out what you like to do and see where it fits in with what the world needs. Pay for your own training. Be good at what you like. Use your social network to publicize it.

We are all called to be something greater than what we are now. It is not just about the famous 5Cs or the cash, the condo, the credit card, and the car. You may want to think about your would-be job -- mundane as it might seem -- as a vocation, something you are called to do, something that will give meaning to your life and touch the life of others.

Frederick Buechner, a great thinker I am just discovering, said it well: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

It’s the question all new graduates ask, and the simple truth is you go out and apply for that job that accepts your qualifications -- high school grad, college grad, male, female, a certain course, speaks a certain language or languages, has a certain set of skills or traits. Note that I did not mention school because I believe that even if they specified a school, if they see you’ve got good, authentic academic credentials and an interesting cover letter, they might give you a second look.

Prepare a proper resume. Do not buy those generic bio-data forms from the bookstore. Using those forms give the impression you either do not know what you are doing or you lack the skill or imagination to draft one. There is no excuse not to be able to make one. There are many useful Web sites that show you how to make a nice one. An impressive resume shows (a) what you could do; (b) what you have accomplished in college; and does so (c) in a font that is big enough to read; and (d) uses a format that makes it fast to read and understand. Put it in outline form with the headings: Objective, Education, Membership/s, Skills, Experience, Reference.

Be sure to include a cover letter that briefly tells the HR person the position you are interested in, why you are interested in it, and what you hope to contribute. Include relevant college activities and your role in them.

Unless they ask you to, do not include an ID or graduation picture with your resume.

Send your resume in the manner the company described, but always have a cover letter. Many companies provide details of how to send your resume. If by e-mail, be sure to put the specific job you are applying for in the subject and include a message briefly describing yourself. Keep your letter short. Use simple words and make sure your grammar is correct. Follow up via e-mail a week or so later.

If you’re sending a hard copy of your letter and resume, please use nice, white bond paper that does not wrinkle fast (substance 80 might do the trick). Do not use colored or perfumed paper. The point is to appear professional. Type the address or glue a sticker with a computer print out of the address on the envelope. Please do not use your handwriting -- it does not matter if you mastered the Palmer Method or Spencerian script. That would come in handy if you had to handwrite formal invitations to a ball at the residence of the company’s managing director. You want your envelope to look neat and not runny with ink.

Prepare for your job interview. Again, there are many books and websites on the process. Think about your answers to the following questions: Why are you applying for this job? What experience do you have? How did your prior experience in school/other organizations prepare you for your job? Could you share one experience where you demonstrated this skill? Could you tell us of an experience where you (a) had to deal with difficult people; (b) worked in a team; (c) lead a team; (d) worked under pressure; (e) organize a project? Could you tell us of an experience where you failed in achieving a goal? What is your greatest strength and weakness? What excites you? Bores you? What do you know about the position being offered? Have you applied with other companies?

Think about your answers carefully and rehearse it. Be sincere and truthful. A skilled interviewer could tell if you’re just saying the things he or she wants to hear.

Wear the proper clothes to the interview. Even if the workplace is reputed to be have a dress-down culture, go to your interview in business clothes. Men should wear a long-sleeved button down polo, slacks, and leather shoes. Ladies should wear non-revealing clothes and pumps and natural-looking makeup. Leave the hoodies, t-shirts, jeans, and flipflops at home. (Yes, ladies, please do reserve the extended eyelashes, fire-red lipstick, chandelier earrings, and blue-green nail polish for the ladies night out).

Be half an hour early for your interview. Anticipate traffic, rain, and any untoward delays by leaving your house early. You would want to have enough time to look neat and relaxed, not sweaty, harassed, and holding a wet resume.

At the interview, assume a relaxed posture, but do not slouch. Lean forward to show interest, eagerness. Listen to the questions well and take your time to answer. Many interviewers are kind and friendly.

Be ready to ask questions about the company and about the job being offered: could they describe it some more? How many people are on the team? To whom will you be reporting? What will you be responsible for? Can they describe their training program? How are employees developed?

When they ask you about the salary, be prepared to give a range -- not an exact figure -- that is similar to what other companies in their organization are offering for the same position. This will leave room for both of you for negotiation.

Is it easy? No. Is it tiring? It could be, but if you think of it as beginning of the grand adventure of your 20-something years, you would want to invest more eagerness into it.

How to handle stress on the job

Getting a job is just the beginning of a new journey. Soon, one realizes that handling a job could be more stressful than getting it. And while all of one's skills and talents are put into good use, one's health plays a major role.

Here are several reminders to help you stay healthy while being part of the country's work force and make it stress-free:

Make sure that you get enough quality rest. It is tempting to extend work hours and sacrifice a good night's rest to finish a task, but if this becomes a habit, the consequences can be very hazardous to one's health and overall wellbeing. Lack of sleep has been linked to diminished capacity to focus, irritability, an impaired immune function and increased susceptibilty to illnesses such as obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

On that note, I also think it's important to give a word of caution regarding the use, misuse and abuse of boosters like energy drinks. Most of them are packed with simple sugars and caffeine - thus the sugar "spike" that makes you feel suddenly awake and alert. This is shortlived, though, and after the spike comes the "crash." Therefore one feels even more exhausted not to mention irritable and uneasy.

Eating properly is also essential. Nowadays, a lot of people are having difficulty in maintaining their weight. I believe this is very strongly linked to the eating habits developed in the office environment. Fast food, for instance, is packed with calories and eating it on a regular basis can definitely cause abrupt weight gain. Also, value meals are almost always includes carbonated drinks. That's a lot of calories again, not to mention chemicals that may be harmful to our systems. There are plenty of options available in the market now.

Timing of the meals is also important. Small, frequent meals spaced three to four hours in between are preferable over big meals spaced hours apart. This trains your system to digest the food completely and use it more efficiently. It also prevents extremes in blood sugar levels, and thus brings about alertness as opposed to the bloated and lazy feeling one gets after a long period of starvation followed by a big meal. Pack sandwiches, a fruit, a bag of nuts, a tub of yogurt in your bag or in your desk. This gives you access to instant snacks you can eat while finishing a deadline.

Finally, it is very much recommended that one adapts a regular, sustainable and most importantly, an enjoyable form of physical activity. It may be in the form of running, bodybuilding, dancing, brisk walking, yoga, etc. It allows the body to burn extra calories. Also, exercising can raise one's level of endorphins, also known as the happy hormone. This can improve one's drive to achieve, socialize more effectively and have a clearer perspective when making decisions.

In today's fast paced and constantly challenging way of living, being in good shape makes our lives more manageable, enjoyable, and fun.

The Right Resume Format for New Graduates

We've gotten requests for the right resume formats - and we'd be more than happy to show you.

It's important to remember, though, that the resume of the new graduate is far different from those who have been working for some time. And even then, the resumes of supervisors and managers would be different from the high-powered executives like CEOs, CFOs, and general managers.

But first let's discuss the resume of new graduates.

The recruiter who is interviewing new graduates knows that these young people don't have work experience yet so they won't be looking for them. What they will be looking for are knowledge, skills, and specialties.

Specialties and knowledge are defined by course subjects and academics. Obviously, what an accounting graduate has learned would be far different from the art major - and companies looking for young accountants and up-and-coming designers would be careful to specify the degree of the person they are looking for.

Skills are a bit tricky. They are revealed and developed not just in class but in extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, part-time jobs, and even helping out in the family business. Let's say you're an accounting major but after classes, you and a couple of friends organize parties and raise funds. That means you have skills in events management, fund-raising and probably networking , too.

It doesn't matter if you're just a new graduate - you're competing with half a million other new graduates looking for work and your resume has to stand out. The more skills you can bring to the table, the better.

This is what you put in your resume (in order):

Name, contact numbers and email addresses
Degree and course, any honors/awards received, university/college attach school transcript of records if required
Extra-curricular activities and skills learned and projects done, whether as part of academia or no
If you headed or were a member of an organization, list that too

Here's a bit of an example:

Worked part-time three evenings a week and two Saturdays a month for the advertising department of J.R. Martin Integrated Marketing Communications Consultancy, as copywriter and project manager.

This small example immediately shows the recruiter that the applicant does not just have a school-based knowledge of marketing, but she has leadership qualities, has a working knowledge of how recruiting operates, and has already been exposed to the actual goings-on in an advertising firm.

Resume: Clear Black Letters on Clean White Paper

White Paper. Black font. Readable font that should be 11-12 in size.

That's it. That's the only format you use in making your resume.

No colored paper. No stick-ons. No rainbow text shining out from the paper in gleaming light.

There's a reason for this tried-and-tested and admittedly stolid format, and it's not to hamper your creativity: resumes should be readable. They should be easy on the eyes - otherwise, how can the recruiter read all that information you've posted on yourself? They should be clear, with nothing in them to make the reader or recruiter squint while he's trying to digest the content in the paper.

They should also be professional looking. They should project that the person who owns the resume means business. He means what he says, he is honest about his credentials - and he can be trusted to do the work.

Your resume should say "I mean business," not "I want to party and have a good time."

Now, you may ask, what about our earlier advice about standing out and grabbing the recruiter's attention?

You do it with the information you put in. Your achievements. Your skills. Your credentials. That's what you bring to the table.

But you have to get the recruiter to want to read your resume first.

Let's repeat: it has to be in white paper with letters in clear, readable black font.

No creases, smears, erasures on the paper, please. That will tell - or imply - to the recruiter that you are sloppy or careless. It doesn't matter if it happened just this one time because you were caught in the middle of the rain which soaked the envelope with your resume on it. There's no time or opportunity to explain to the recruiter. In that scene, you would be better off reprinting and resubmitting the resume rather than risk a bad impression.

For creative types who want to show off their designs or written work, there's an avenue to do that in a way that gives you freedom to push the envelope. It's called the portfolio. We'll discuss that in a few days.

That's the first thing our career coaches tell our eager job-hunting new graduates in our career talks. Resumes are vital to getting that job interview. They call the attention of the recruiter to you, and inform them about your skills, experience, and all the other positive qualities that you can bring to the table should he decide to hire you.

One of these days, we'll do a series on writing a power resume. But right now, let's just stick with the basics.

Resumes should be clear, concise, and clean. They can't be cluttered, dirty, and loaded with a lot of information that your recruiter won't care about. Unless you're a CEO with a 20-year experience to your name, refrain from writing 5-page resumes. Your recruiter will just take one look at those long thick pages and put you on his 'to-read' pile. Remember: he has dozens (if not hundreds) of resumes to browse through, and only a few seconds to spare each. The quicker he can get through his stack, the better.

A two-page resume would appear efficient to him. And you really need just two pages to put what's important to your recruiter.

Your page one is important. It should immediately catch the eye of the recruiter. What it should contain and spill over to page 2 are as follows:

Your name
Your contact info (email, address, landline, cell phone numbers)
Your work experience
Your skills
Your educational attainment

What it should NOT contain:

Your parents' birthdays
The number of siblings in your family
Your parents' occupations
Your zodiac sign
Any other personal stuff that does not contribute to your professional standing

It's a resume - not a slumbook. Be professional, not personal.

Start by protecting your page one.

In choosing a job offer, what should I consider? Should I just wait for my dream job to turn up, or make do with what is given me and work towards the career I really want?

Receiving a job offer from another company or from a headhunter could be an exciting, ego-boosting, and anxiety-causing experience. Whether you accept the offer all really depends on what you’re striving for, what makes you happy, and what you could live with, and not necessarily in that order.

Goals. Why do you work? Where do you see yourself in three, five, ten, fifteen years?

If, on the one hand, you’re like most new graduates in that you still might be unsure about what the professional world has to offer. If this were the case, take the time to get to know it, learn new skills like how to get along with others you don’t like (including, possibly, your boss), getting work done given the resources you have, opportunities within the work place and in similar companies. It signifies some measure of stability and self-mastery if you are able to stay in a job.

If, one the other hand, you’ve been working for around three years, you might want to take the time to assess where your career is going. What have you mastered in that time? What else would you want to do? Where can you go to learn the skills needed for the next level? Are you being groomed for a higher position? It might be a good time to consider that offer, see what you’re “worth” given your skill and knowledge set, especially, if it does not seem like there is a career development plan for you.

Fulfillment. People stay longer in jobs they love. And workers who love their jobs are nice to have around as team mates, staff members, and yes, bosses. Bosses do take note of people who have a passion for their work and who exude a positive energy in the workplace.

If you are considering an offer, you have to know what motivates you to work better: people? pay? corporate culture? the challenge of the job? Work does not have to be a drudge.

What kind of work and work environment makes you want to get up in the morning and head to the office? What kind makes you want to just stay in bed? Examine what is being offered to you and see whether you would still be excited about the job by the end of 12 months.

Reality. Many times, there is no dream workplace or dream job, but you could use this current reality as a bridge to what you want for your career. Also, it might be that the job itself is not what gives you fulfillment, but what the job enables you to do: provide for your family, buy a car, take advance studies, engage in a hobby, travel. If the job on offer enables you to do something like that, you might consider it.

The key is not to just let things happen to you or to wait for better opportunities. You have to find a way for these opportunities to come your way like: updating your resume and actually sending it to a headhunter, coming up with your own page on a professional networking site, or joining organizations related to your areas of interest. There are millions of students graduating each year, all of them hungry for jobs, for career opportunities and all of them want to make a good impression. Waiting for the dream just isn’t going to work.

Brass tacks. Now, what are the practical things you need to know about job offers?

Know the company. Ask about what the company does or makes, how long has it been in existence, its standing among others in its field. Who are their customers? You could ask the HR or recruiter this question: if you could compare your company to a car, what would it be like?

Know the job.Why are they offering this job? What happened to the guy who was in it? If it is a new position, what was it created for? Who do you report to? Do people report to you? Do you have to deal with people outside the company? What kind of people? What results are you accountable for? How will you be evaluated for these results? What are the hours like? Is it near or far from home? Is there a career development plan in place?

Understand the contract. Familiarize yourself with the labor laws in your country, so you know what the legal base pay is. Then, find out, what the competitive rates are for those in your position in the same industry. Clarify the following: mandatory health benefits, sick leaves, vacation leaves, incentives including their computation and criteria, the department and position you are reporting to, the position you will be given, the mode of work evaluation, when the evaluation will be made, etc.

If they train you, is there a training bond? Upon what specific conditions will you be made to pay the bond? How do they define training? Is attending an orientation on commercially available software considered training? People have been made to pay for bonds for attending an orientation on a document or presentation application, the tutorials of which are available for free online. You may want to have that training specified in your contract.

What are the terms of termination? How many weeks notice do they require? Will you be allowed to work for a similar company if you resigned? Have all of these put in writing so you could study it carefully.

Then, make a table with two columns in it. Entitle the table: my dream. Write out your dream. Make it as specific, as vivid as possible. Label one column, “Things about this job that will help me achieve my dream.” Label the other column, “Things about this job that will stop me from achieving my dream.” Sort out all the information you have into the two columns.

Then, ask yourself, will this, in the long term, bring me what I want for myself and my career? Then, sleep on it, trust your gut, and decide.###

Job hunting is marketing yourself

All the resumes we write and the job interviews we undergo are designed to get us a job. That’s why we give our best to persuade the recruiter to take a chance on us and hire us. Actually, whether we know it or not, the minute we send a resume to step in through the door of the person doing the interviewing, what we are – or should be – communicating is, “Hire me. I’m the best person for this job.”

(And if you’re not saying that, then why are you applying for the post in the first place?)

It is a bold, daring statement – especially given that there are competitors for the post. If you’re a new graduate, you’re fighting a good part of the 500,000 new graduates who leave the universities every single year. And if you’re not, you’re competing against others who may have more experience and skills. Or these others may jus t be adept in marketing themselves during the job interview.

Now, what should an employer see the first time you come in, or the first time he reads your resume? Remember: first impressions count. And in a hiring process that takes a recruiter only a few seconds to check a resume or half an hour to assess an applicant, they don’t allow for second chances.

That means you have to inspire the employer in perceiving you as follows:

• Your experience and skill matches the requirement of the position.

• You are a total professional who will execute to his best the job given you.

• You can be trusted with the job at hand.

• You can be trusted with other but no less important things such as the security and reputation of the company.

• You are a team player who can work with the boss and your own colleagues.

• You want to excel and keep on learning.

I bet the HR personnel are tired of looking at those papers. I bet sometimes they all look the same to them. And unless there is something REALLY compelling about you on your resume, I bet the chances of you getting called for an interview is slim.

How do you make employers read your resume among hundreds of others?

CREATIVE RESUMES

"Show. Don't Tell." - it's the number one rule in writing a resume - even in the plain format. In providing your job description, you should always be able to give clear numbers and statistics of accomplishments and other information.

Creatives Resumes are extremely helpful especially if you are applying for a job that requires you to be creative such as web designer, graphic designer, architect, interior designer, artist, etc. However, keep in mind that creative resumes are not limited to applications to those positions.

Age 40 and older? How to get a Job

Unemployed at 40 is no joke, especially in today's economic status. Here in the Philippines, people aging 40 and above cannot retire just yet because of children to feed and send to school. If not, much older parents and siblings still need financial support. More reasons include fulfillment of goals and ambitions like purchase of a car and a house. No, jobless at 40 just won't do.

However, job hunting at 40 can be quite a struggle. Many job qualifications now have an age requirement. Younger applicants are preferred because (1) they most likely know the newest techniques in the industry, (2) they are easier to train because they still haven't developed strong work etiquette (3) their ideas are still fresh, their minds more open, their eager to learn, in short - their passion for the job is there (4) companies can pay them less since their value as a worker is yet to be established (5) younger employees can be trained to stay for a longer time in the company than those who's soon to retire.

How to battle these reasons, here's HOW to GET a JOB at 40:

1. Don't stop learning. Many older employers tend to stick to what has been effective for years in service; afraid to take risks in trying new trends and techniques. Do not forget that new studies exist, new practices grow more effective.

Take time to study. If you think that the older practices are still more effective, be prepared to justify it with studies and statistics of older ways side by side with corresponding studies and stats of the new ways.

2. Create a portfolio. Prepare a portfolio of the things that you have done in your past careers. Include some of the studies that you have done; much like presenting work plans. Make sure your portfolio is highly visual with numbers and graphs, bullet points, etc. For easy scanning. By doing is, you are showing what you have done before, how effective you are and how open you are for newer things in the industry.

Include a one-page portfolio summary with your resumé. Make it highly interesting such that it would be a teaser for the employer to want to make you come for an interview and see more of your portfolio.

3.Make a good Career Objective. Make the employer know that you are up for career success; that you are not only seeking employment for financial benefits. Project your career objective for at least 5 years so they'll know that you're an employee that will stay.

4. Show Your Worth. For some employers, they prefer new applicants because they can pay them less, saving funds. However, wise and good employers select the older ones for expertise. During this recession period, these employers cannot afford to give the company in the hands of rookies. They will get the experts to make the company stay afloat and survive the crisis.

Thus, make your employer realize that you are worth 2 rookies. Prepare your resumé with your achievements. Emphasize your achievements and skills. Write in statistics and numbers.

5. Be Vibrant, Passionate and Eager. One kind of employee that employers do not want is the kind that cannot and does not want to be trained. Sure, you have achieved so much in more or less 20 years of work experience. However, keep your humility and admit that you have yet so much to learn and achieve. Show that you are willing to help the company in its objectives.

In your resumé, include this in your career objective. In your interview, don't be too professional and stiff. Try to warm up a bit with your interviewer so he or she'll know that you are a person who can blend well with a team, approachable and warm to co-workers. Cracking jokes is not a must. Smile warmly, be sincere and add a personal comment or two when appropriate.

Resumé Tip: You don't need to write your age or birthday on the resumé. The essentials are Name, Permanent Address, Telephone Number, Email Address. Follow it up by your list of relevant experience if not, skills.

Job Interview Tips: A Simple Speech Lesson

Interviews are conducted to assess an applicant's intelligence, wit and personality. An interviewer assesses how quick you can come up with answers and how articulate you can deliver.

However prepared you may be, nervousness could catch up with you especially when you're face to face with the boss who's highly intimidating. When this happens, you lose your concentration and may give the wrong answers and babble uncontrollably that you just have to stop in mid-sentence to ask yourself, "What was I saying?"

Here is a simple (and basic) speech lesson to keep your thoughts organized no matter what the question is.

P.R.E.P

1. P is for POINT : Your first sentence should include your point or your answer in a sentence or two. If you have several answers, enumerate them all here.

For example: What are your strengths? My strengths include being hardworking, goal-oriented and a team player.

2. R is for REASON: This is also a brief 1-2 sentences for your reason. State your point then reason.

Example: I am a very hardworking person because I believe that I can achieve success through hard work and perseverance.

3. E is for EXPLAIN/ELABORATE: Here is the part where you can tell more about your reason. Tell an Experience when you were able to demonstrate your skill or whatever answer you have.

For a more effective answer, give facts and figures about what you did. For example, in 2008, I was able to raise our sales by 30%. This technique does not only apply in resume writing but also in interview answering. Be more descriptive in your answers.

If you have more points than one, use the pattern Point-reason-explain, point-reason-explain, etc. until you have to conclude.

4. P is for POINT (again): This concludes what you just said. When you answer questions, you can sometimes be put off by how you are going to conclude your statements. Usually, you end up with a pause, a smile then, "So there!"

To end gracefully, go back in summary to the points that you just made. It could be as simple as, "Again, my strengths-among others-are being hardworking, goal-oriented and a team player."

With this pattern, your speech would be more organized therefore, understandable. Not only will you avoid being confused but you will also impress your potential employer on how well you can communicate clearly.

5 Ways to Boost your Resumé Power. If you read Part 1, you know by now that your resumé is not only your ordinary list of personal details, educational background and employment history. Read this 2^nd part and find more on how you can make your potential employer READ (not scan) and be interested in hiring you today!

Objective – How many of you actually pay attention to writing a good career objective? The objective makes your employer know your goals and career personality. Are you the type who aims high? Do you have a clear vision of what you want to be?

Write your objective this way: State what you want to be, in what span of time and which of your career strengths would you focus on developing.

Example: Career Objective: A floor supervisor in 5 months time, training and assisting agents in giving excellent customer service.

Use Action Words – Instead of writing what you were, write what you did.

Example: Technical Support Representative vs. Assisted customers in modem installation and DSL account registration.

Employers usually ask for work description during interviews. Writing your most important tasks in your previous work experiences catches the attention of employers. Be concise.

Use figures and numbers – Numbers and symbols such as % stand out amidst the pool of words in your resume. Should your potential employer scan, their eyes will surely fall on the numbers. Use them wisely especially on your brief work description.

Example 1: Submitted a total of 5,000 word web-content articles in a 24-hour turn-around period.

Example 2: Sold real estate with a 90% success-rate.

Fix your Format – Format helps the reader scan your resumé better, seeing the details. Make your resumé readable. If your resumé looks cramped and boring, it might not get the chance at all to be read.

Tip #1: Font should be the standard fonts (Arial, Times New Roman), size from 10 – 13.

Functional Resumé Style

> Highlights work experiences and skills
> Best for fresh graduates (emphasis on seminars, extra-curricular activities, part-time jobs, internships, volunteer work)
> Best if you had several work experiences which are not related to desired position
> Best if moving or changing careers
> Write it in your resumé according to relevance to your desired position, not according to date

Use this style if you've had several work experiences that will contribute to your performance, should you be hired in your desired position. With this type of resumé, there is emphasis on what you can do rather than positions and line of business that you've had before.

Chronological Resumé Style

> Highlights past positions, company and achievements in previous jobs
> Best used when applying for better positions in the same line of business
> Write it in reverse chronological order.

Use this style if you think that your past employment and positions can serve as strong back-up for you to get the job. If you want to impress your potential employer with a prestigious company that you have worked before, use the chronological style.

Having learned that, your resumé should be written in order of importance. Ask yourself, "what do I want my potential employer to learn about me first?" Forget the save-the-best-for-last saying. Going to Job Fairs sounds like hope and opportunity for the job seekers. You go to a job fair and saw the seemingly hundreds of job seekers just like you. How do you stand out? How do you prepare to be noticed in these job fairs?

Prepare your Resumé (and prepare it well) -- The resumé is your sales material. It's your 30-second self-advertisement. Resumés only get SCANNED for about a maximum of 30 seconds if your resumé is even worth reading. Make sure that your resumé is concise, direct yet specific. Limit your resumé to 1 page, maximum of 2 pages. Bring up to 10 copies.

Prepare your clothes (and iron well) -- The people representing each participating company in a job fair are most probably instructed to pre-scan and sort the resumés. Some already ask some basic interview questions and add notes on your resumé. Be prepared and dress well. Wear business-casual to semi-formal attire. Appear as smart as you can. However, dress comfortably as job fairs could get hot and crowded. Forget your stilletoes and opt for smart lower heels. Bring a handkerchief and a fan just in case.

Prepare your pen, paper -- Many applicants get turned down on the spot just because they failed to bring a pen. It is a given that applicants need a pen to sign forms, exams, information, etc. Failure to have pen and paper means that you are unprepared.

Prepare your research -- If possible, research about the participating companies in the job fair. It will save you a lot of time and won't need to browse too long. Also, through research, you get to know which has job openings are suited for you. You can also write your company-specific resumé. Researching has a lot of advantages; use it well and often.

Prepare your mind -- Don't forget to bring your mind with you. Make sure that you know your objectives in job seeking. Be prepared to answer questions that might be asked of you during your job inquiries.

If not for my state of being that just resists the call-center life, I would have gone to ePerformax. It's one of the top call centers in the country.
